The Old Birdhouse

The Old Birdhouse
The charming design of this old, weathered birdhouse—gnaw marks and all—make this a truly special piece. It’s easy to imagine a grandfather long ago carefully cutting shapes from pine wood while his little apprentice, a patient grandchild, watches eagerly, waiting for a chance to help. At last, under the watchful eye of the elder, the young protégé gets to drive the finishing nails into the soft wood. By the end of a busy day, the birdhouse is complete—ready to be hung on the cedar tree behind the barn. After surviving years of hurricanes, blizzards, and warm bluebird skies, this birdhouse--home to countless birds--has entered a new chapter of it’s story.
Originally covered in lichen after many years outdoors, the birdhouse was sanded, stained in shades of navy and spice, and sealed with a clear matte finish. The needle felted wool barn owl and two mice are built over a wire armatures and have solid wool cores. The eyes of all three are wool with a hint of reflective fiber. The owl’s realistic beak is carved and painted epoxy. The mice whiskers are horsehair. All the creatures are permanently secured into place. The little ladybug is handmade with wire, epoxy, horsehair, and paint. A wash of metallic silver paint and silver stars complete the whimsical night sky. Measures 14 inches wide and tall, and 4.5 inches deep. Signed on reverse.
