Humpback Whale

Humpback Whale

$325.00

The scientific name for the humpback whale is Megaptera novaeangliae, meaning "big-winged New Englander." Humpback flippers, or pectoral fins, can grow to sixteen feet long. Their overall size can reach 60 feet long (80 meters) and weigh about 40 tons!

This needle felted humpback whale is 17 inches long and the drift wood on which it is mounted measures 20 inches long. The whale is 100% wool throughout and built over a wire armature. The tubercles are iridescent beads hand sewn to the head. There is also a felted barnacle colony at the anterior of the ventral grooves. The wool topcoat is a color blend of blue and black with iridescent fiber to add shimmer, giving it the effect of dappled underwater light. The driftwood is from a local Eastham beach and the scientific name is wood-burned into it. The dowels are lucite. The underside of the driftwood is signed and dated by the artist. This large wool sculpture looks great on a bookshelf or mantle

This is not a toy and is made for display only. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
